  • In today’s internet age, we all prefer doing everything online. Earlier we would do all our homework, assignments and projects on paper. These things required long laborious hours of pondering over books and reference material; sitting hours in the college libraries and writing it down quoting authors and all.

But now these hours are converted into minutes. This is because all these books are available in the form of eBooks online and the reference material is easily found as well. While this should work in favour of students as they all have access to the required study material, it is turning out to be a nightmare for the professors and the writing tutors.

At various universities, students are being held up for plagiarism. They have, of course, no clue what plagiarism is all about. Plagiarism simply means that these kids are ripping off or rather copy pasting material directly from the web.

Most of this material is from Wikipedia and because there is no author credited to this site, they simple copy paste it, thinking it is all good to submit their assignment like that. However, the professors are keenly aware of such activities.

Unfortunately when a student was questioned about the copy paste job, he simply wanted to know how to copy things in a manner in which they would not be caught. He did not try to give any justification. More and more students are being sent to writing tutors for the same reason.

This is a grave issue but then students have simply not understood the concept of plagiarism. On the internet, there is a lot more a student can do. In fact they can set up Wikipedia pages and also ezine articles for various subjects they are working on. However, all of this requires references and research. Plus they should all be writing original pieces of work.

Although the professors are aware about the laws of plagiarism, they now totally abhor the ‘copy paste’ job. They are academic scholars and believe in their original piece of work.

What students’ today lack is an insight into the subject. They do not value the work they do anymore. As long as the work is done, it is fine. They might be using the same pc or laptop to download illegal films and music and to copy paste homework.

They do not understand the concept of propriety. They think because they have not seen the written material in a book in the library and there is no author credited, it is okay to just use it as their own work.

Maybe this is happening because a lot of material on any subject it is freely available to the students. Plus there is no one to monitor and it is definitely easier to do this than to pour over books in the library.

The truth behind all of this is that students are simply not prepared to go to college and undertake laborious work of any kind.
