  • Advice of experienced career specialists is taken for knowing about how the choice of courses in high school or college affects your career chances. Ann Emerson is one of the popular specialists include Stafford County Public school’s Ann Emerson.

She sends enquiring students a copy of the appraisal of the national campaign to expand science and math education. She also says that it is a highly challenging task to get students to opt for subjects like biotechnology, physics, psychometrics and chemistry.

Today, the most fashionable trend in the field of higher education is popularly referred to as STEM which stands for science, technology, engineering and math. More emphasis is placed on these subjects by STEM advocates. More numbers of teachers are being trained in these subjects in a bid to enhance their quality.

This idea was welcomed by the Bush administration and continues to charm the Obama administration too. STEM grants are sought after by both big and small colleges around the country. Every single educational institution around our country is excited with the hugely popular STEM except the students who are forced to study these subjects whether they are good at them or not and whether they like them or not. In other words, they are forced to contribute to the success of this movement.

According to Ann Emerson, one of the very few realistic specialists, STEM is definitely not the pot of gold you can find at the end of the rainbow. Science is a mystery that transforms human existence. Their curiosity and strong desire to know what it is all about is the main reason why people choose science careers.

However, realistically speaking, Ann says that the financial rewards are not quite substantial and many STEM students face a lot of frustrations as they try to establish their career.  You will surely have enough bills to pay if your child is STEM bug bitten. Ann says that finance and business still pays well and many STEM graduates eventually choose these disciplines too in a bid to earn more.

Some students embarking on their STEM journey drop out due to fear. Ann says that for most, the last chance to acquire STEM literacy is therefore only in high school. She opines that though our country does need innovative developments in the field of science and technology, we also need more people who know how to formulate priorities and are adept at dealing with short sighted fixes’ consequences.

No doubt, if you are scientifically or mathematically inclined, then STEM is for you. But for many others, STEM courses are good only at the high school level. It is essential for students to follow their instincts and recognize their field of specialty for, after all, the best subjects to study are those that make you think and not memorize, according to Ann.

It is essential for students therefore to not blindly follow the brood. Rather, they must take the help of expert student counselors and specialists and make an informed decision.
