Generally speaking, universities allow you to bring in only a certain number of credits over. So there is a limit, you can place out your some math, english, some lower level natural sciences classes, history and/or government. You can save approximately one semester.

You can place out a whole bunch of classes and also take summer and winter breaks to shorten your 4-year degree. Most colleges allow you to transfer no more than 30 semester hours over that count toward your degree. So, there's only so much you can place out.
