Job No. 138993

  • Job Title:
  • Director of Campus Activities and Student Orientation
  • Employer:
  • Colorado College
  • Location:
  • -- , CO
  • Posting Date:
  • 12-Mar-2018
  • Description:
  • Founded in 1874, Colorado College (CC) is an independent, coeducational, liberal arts and sciences college of bold ideas, located in the beautiful city of Colorado Springs on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains at the foot of Pikes Peak. Ranked among the top 25 National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News and World Report, Colorado College enjoys an unequivocal mission: to provide the finest liberal arts education in the country. What makes Colorado College distinct is its inimitable combination of program, place, and people. Colorado College is a unique institution in terms of geography and pedagogy. Set in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado College is the only selective liberal arts college in the region and enrolls just over 2,000 undergraduate students. Through 37 academic departments, faculty engage students directly and prepare them for leadership in the 21st century. The College’s signature academic program, the “Block Plan,” is an intensive academic schedule that allows students to immerse themselves in a single subject for three and a half weeks, rather than balancing several courses over a semester. One example of the College’s innovative work is the integration with the world-renowned Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (now the Fine Arts Center at Colorado College), which has greatly expanded arts programming and sparked new interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Students at Colorado College learn more than theoretical approaches; they learn to embrace the importance of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints and appreciate how diversity enriches their understanding of the world.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Campus Activities and Student Orientation plans, develops, and coordinates all proceedings for a wide range of activities, programs, and services that enhance the quality of student life at the College, and provides a renewed vision and excitement to three integral components of the co/extra-curricular student experience: Campus Activities, New Student Orientation, and Winter-Start Orientation. The Director creates collaborative partnerships across campus and supports student success and retention through sustained and relevant engagement, synergistically connecting academic and non-academic life. The Director is responsible for providing a robust array of co/extra-curricular opportunities, assessing the current campus activities model and recommending future changes, directing and attending signature events (Winter Ball, Hallo-week, Blues & Shoes, Llamapalooza, and the Student Events Summit), managing the social media presence for the department, overseeing the band practice space, serving as secondary advisor to CCSGA and primary advisor to other student organizations, developing and managing budgets, and serving on staffing teams for student events. Additionally, the Director assesses, re-envisions, arranges, oversees, and delivers all aspects of fall and winter Student Orientations, including the coordination of planning teams, development of communication campaigns to students and parents, and primary oversight of the daily operations of the Orientation experience. The Director also supports the efforts of the Division of Student Life in promoting environmental sustainability and protection; greater diversity, equity, and inclusion; and a campus culture of safety. The Director supervises one paraprofessional staff, as well as a team of student interns.

A master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel services, student affairs administration, or other relevant field, with a minimum of three years of full-time experience in a collegiate setting working directly with students is required; the successful candidate will possess demonstrated expertise in campus activities, planning and managing large-scale events, new student orientation, and student leadership development. The successful candidate must also be adept at developing and sustaining relationships, possess an understanding of and commitment to supporting diversity, possess critical thinking skills, and have an appreciation of the value of liberal arts in a residential setting. The ability to be a forward-thinking visionary with excitement and passion for the work at hand, employ current uses of technology, and understand how students think, learn, and spend their time outside of the classroom are highly desirable skills. The successful candidate must be available to work nights and weekends, and must also possess high personal integrity, the ability to lead and follow, excellent oral and written communication skills, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, strong administrative and organizational skills, a positive attitude, and the capacity to function well autonomously.
