Job Summary
The Associate Director is a storyteller, an ambassador, an executive editor, and a brand manager for all broadcast and digital content distribution, including WFIU, WTIU, and related websites and streams.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Leads all marketing, communications, and brand management efforts for IU Radio Television Services. This includes marketing WFIU and WTIU to the public and overseeing the stations external and internal communications strategies.
Reports to The Media School's Director of Communication and Marketing.
Responsible for managing the RTVS communication and marketing staff, executing the department's strategic planning, and developing and managing the department's annual budget.
Develops creative marketing strategies to promote tune-in and downloads of content, ensures effective positioning of the organization across various communications platforms, and builds strong/meaningful brand recognition so that audiences will choose to consume media from the RTVS public media outlets.
Key member of the RTVS leadership team and is expected to help create a positive work culture, be a good communicator, and advance unit and RTVS strategic goals.
Provides operational management and oversight to team of general communications staff. Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
Develops and manages all aspects of external communication for WTIU and WFIU, including media partnerships, press relations, press releases, articles, on-air promotions, and e-newsletters, as well as web, social media, advertising, and public relations strategies.
Manages communications with external stakeholders, including public media consumers, members, cable providers, etc.
Prepares and continuously update strategic plans for marketing and communications that support the RTVS organizational strategic goals.
Supervises the marketing and communications team by providing clear goals and expectations, managing career development, and providing appropriate training.
Promotes an internal work culture that is based on mutual respect for others and is rooted in good communication.
Be a key member of the RTVS leadership team and attend meetings and make presentations as required.
Collaborates closely with other RTVS units, including the Content Group, News, Engagement and Events, and Development to develop and excute communications and marketing strategies to support their objectives.
Provides internal communication consultation and support to leadership.
Researches, edits, and manages production of WTIU and WFIU member magazines and newsletters.
Works with national partners like PBS and NPR to incorporate national resources into RTVS marketing and communication efforts.
Implements data analysis and other feedback mechanisms to monitor effectiveness of messages and their methods of delivery.
Reviews, utilizes, and shares performance metrics and ROI analytics to inform data-driven decisions and strategic initiatives.
Other duties as assigned by unit leadership.
General Responsibilities
Directs day-to-day operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department or large multi-faceted department.
Trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, and supervises the work of a team of Communications Generalists and/or Communications Assistants.
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines communications needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and supervises processes such as the development of communications timelines related to such initiatives.
Reviews drafts of communications and coaches on grammar, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect the perception of messaging or reputation of the department.
Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
May assist in budget planning and administration for communications initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and program costs.
Monitors industry trends and best practices and makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager.

EDUCATION
Required
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
2 years in relevant field
Preferred
Experience with social media, Adobe products, Cascade CMS, and CRM platforms
