JOB PURPOSE:
The hired person will be one of two histotechnologists providing high quality, and timely histology services within the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory. The activity is essential to supporting the health of companion animals, livestock, and wildlife in the state and region. Functions include, but are not limited to the following: embedding formalin fixed tissues, thin sectioning tissues, histochemical staining, immunohistochemistry, coverslipping slides, equipment use and maintenance and training and management of student employees.
The position is available at the technician II and III levels. The search process will identify a candidate that fits best with either the II or III level positions. Distinctions in responsibilities between these levels is outlined below.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and responsibilities for technician II and III positions
Embed formalin fixed, processed tissues in paraffin wax to facilitate sectioning.
Thin section a variety of tissue samples using a microtome and mount the sections on glass microscope slides.
Perform routine hematoxylin and eosin staining and coverslipping of sectioned slides.
Perform histochemical staining techniques by hand using various different techniques.
Perform immunohistochemistry procedures using different staining platforms.
Operate, and maintain sensitive scientific instruments.
Routinely use hazardous chemicals in instruments and in manual staining procedures.
Comply with UW biosafety and chemical safety requirements.
Assist with hiring, training and management of undergraduate student employees.
2. Essential duties and responsibilities for technician III position only
Co-manage the laboratory’s workflow to meet expected deadlines
Develop, maintain and comply with quality control procedures necessary to maintain AAVLD accreditation
Develop and validate new staining procedures as needs are identified
Autonomously manage and direct the daily operations of the Histopathology Laboratory
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Serve as a backup for one other WSVL laboratory section.
Maintain inventory and purchase laboratory supplies.
Maintain hazardous materials in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Technician II: Bachelor’s degree in a biologic science (animal science, veterinary or health science, biology, anatomy/physiology or related field). One year of relevant laboratory experience to include undergraduate experience.
Technician III: Bachelor’s degree in a biologic science. Two years of relevant laboratory experience (diagnostic services, veterinary medicine, laboratory procedures/techniques, or a related field or educational equivalent) to include at least 1 years’ experience in a histology laboratory obtained after graduation.
Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:
Some positions may require equipment operation training, hazardous materials shipping and/or emissions quality control training, certification and re-certification after employed.
Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) ASCP certification.
Experience in histology including embedding, thin sectioning/microtomy, staining techniques, immunohistochemistry.
Knowledge of safety, chemical, and biological hazards of the occupation.
Ability to communicate effectively, foster a cooperative team environment, and perform as a member of a team.
Knowledge of diagnostic laboratory assays, protocols, and practices.
