Job Summary
The Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment – Division of Regulatory Services is seeking a Laboratory Technician Senior to support its mission of ensuring the quality and regulation of animal feed, fertilizer, seed, and raw milk for Kentucky consumers and to provide educational analysis for its service programs of soil, seed, hemp, lime and forage testing.
This position will prepare and analyze soil samples for soil fertility in a production-oriented laboratory. Duties include grinding, sieving, sub-sampling, measuring, extraction, analysis, ordering supplies, and cleaning. Laboratory testing includes pH, Mehlich III extractable nutrients, organic C and N analysis, soil cation exchange capacity, soil texture, greenhouse growing media analysis, water analysis, Lime testing and animal waste analysis. Must follow safe laboratory procedures, prepare chemical standards and reagents with minimal supervision, and maintain an inventory of chemicals and supplies. Additional duties include maintaining laboratory equipment, ordering supplies, and coordinating with instrument vendors for troubleshooting and preventative maintenance. Assist or participate in interdepartmental laboratory work, cross training with similar positions may be necessary and assigned as needed.
As a key team member, the Laboratory Technician Senior will contribute to upholding high standards and ensuring the delivery of superior agricultural products.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
The applicant must be able to follow written laboratory procedures and safety protocols. Preparing solutions, reagents, and standards is required. Attention to details and a willingness to help others are needed. Familiarity with ion-selective electrode methodology, pH meter operation, soil grinding and sieving equipment is helpful. Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel are required.
