Job Description Summary
Organizational Summary Statement:
This position is located in Saint Mary's County, Maryland. The A. James Clark School of
Engineering, University of Maryland, is seeking a Research Lab Manager to lead the
day-to-day lab operations of the Maryland Autonomous Technologies Research and
Innovation and eXploration (MATRIX) Lab at University System of Maryland at Southern
Maryland (USMSM). Reporting to the Administration and Finance Coordinator, the
Research Lab Manager is responsible for the execution of the Director's strategic plan
for all operations in the MATRIX.
The Research Lab Manager manages and supports the administration and operations
of the research labs in the new Southern Maryland Autonomous Research and
Technology (SMART) Building at USMSM. Serving as the expert for the research facility
and the equipment for the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the MATRIX Lab,
the position actively works with researchers and students from academia, industry, and
government agencies to ensure safe operation of equipment, provide additional skills
instruction, and advise on research design and construction, including issues such as
selection of components and applications.
The Research Lab Manager supports research activities across the USMSM campus by
working with researchers to help design and then fabricate components for various
applications. In addition to the MATRIX, the Research Lab Manager works with the
education component of the SMART Building and supports their lab manager,
equipment and facilities. The position coordinates and supports academic courses and
extracurricular projects that utilize the MATRIX and hires, trains, and oversees a variety
of graduate and undergraduate research assistants/students. The Research Lab
Manager is also responsible for providing tours of the SMART building to visiting
researchers, academic collaborators, and other external stakeholders, as requested.

Physical Demands: This position may require the use of respiratory protection during
certain laboratory activities in compliance with applicable safety standards. The Lab
Manager must be able to lift and move equipment or materials weighing up to 50
pounds and perform tasks that may involve standing, bending, or working in varied
physical positions for extended periods.

Preferences:
Education and technical expertise - Bachelor’s degree in engineering or
closely related discipline (or equivalent combination of education, training, and at least four additional years of related experience). Broad skills across multiple engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical, aerospace) with the ability to design and fabricate research apparatus and components from verbal or written instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three (3) years of professional research or contract administration experience. One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional staff.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
