This Research Assistant III opening will be responsible for a variety of tasks within the Freshwater Research Laboratory (FRL) at the Flathead Lake Biological Station.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Carrying out complex laboratory technical operations requiring a knowledge of scientific methods in biogeochemistry and freshwater ecology
Conducting standardized testing/analysis procedures, using approved methods
Preparing associated solutions, reagents, standards, etc.
Operating specialized analytical equipment for environmental analysis
Troubleshooting analytical problems and instituting remedial measures when appropriate
Working with FLBS and external researchers to ensure sample collection and log-in is consistent with FRL protocol
Preliminary data evaluation and entry into laboratory information system database
Assisting in development of new analytical techniques as needed
May collect samples in the field for testing
Perform related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Four-year degree at an accredited university in chemistry, biology, ecology, environmental science or an equivalent field of the physical sciences and have a minimum of 2 years professional experience in a laboratory.
Knowledge of the function and importance of common laboratory safety practices and equipment
Ability to accurately prepare standards and reagents with the use of pipettes, balances, and volumetric glassware
Competency in algebraic calculations as they relate to chemical preparation (i.e. unit conversions, dilutions, regressions, etc.)
Ability to follow detailed written protocols
Competency in computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel; data entry and database use
Ability to use standard statistical assessment approaches to generate, assess quality of and report data derived from the analytical processes employed in the laboratory
Eagerness to work both independently and as part of a team

Work Schedule: Full-time, M-F 8-5
Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum
