The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Environmental Engineering starting in Fall 2026. This is a 10-month appointment.

Hampton Roads experiences one of the highest rates of sea level rise on the East Coast, making it a prime research area to study the effects of rising waters on coastal infrastructures and resilience. The region houses critical infrastructure including military bases and major ports. The new faculty member will play a critical role in the BCET’s strategic vision for tackling global challenges related to coastal resilience and national security. The prime objective is to strengthen and expand the research expertise in environmental engineering specializing in environmental water quality, water/wastewater treatment, resource recovery, modeling wastewater treatment and water distribution systems, and biosolids treatment.

The position provides opportunities to develop research collaborations with Hampton Roads Sanitation District’s (HRSD) Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT), a multiyear project to replenish the groundwater supply in the overdrawn Potomac Aquifer. Other collaboration potentials exist with researchers in the College of Sciences (CoS), Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience (ICAR), School of Data Science (SDS), School of Public Service (SPS), Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC), local government agencies such as the City of Norfolk, and federal partners including the U.S. Navy, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

The candidate is expected to possess research expertise in some of the following areas:
Advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies
Water reuse, circular water systems, decentralized treatment technologies for water sustainability and resilience
Resource recovery (e.g., nutrients, critical minerals) from wastewater
Application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in water and wastewater treatment technologies
    Physio-chemical processes and aquatic chemistry
    Data-driven management of water infrastructure
Emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS and microplastics) and water quality monitoring

The candidate must be able to:
Develop and sustain a nationally and internationally recognized sponsored research program
Develop and teach undergraduate courses in civil and environmental engineering
Supervise and mentor students and serve on committees
Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities
