    Description of Work

Thus, the job responsibilities and essential functions for library faculty should be interpreted in the context of the Library’s strategic plan.

    Library faculty engage in service to the University, community, and profession. We create physical and digital environments that encourage learning and innovation, build and preserve collections, support research, and advance scholarship. We provide access to and promote the discovery of information. We help our communities become proficient information users and lifelong learners. Library faculty serve current and future UNC Charlotte students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the Greater Charlotte and global community by sustaining the intellectual and creative life, and facilitating lifelong learning, discovery, and engagement.

    Library faculty are expected to collaborate within the Library and beyond in the performance of professional duties that may include, but are not limited to: selecting, organizing, preserving, and facilitating access to materials; supporting teaching, learning, and research; providing outreach to the campus and community; and developing and maintaining digital and technological innovations.

    Library faculty participate in scholarly research, creative endeavors, and professional activities to serve the Library, the University, and the information professions. Library faculty are strongly encouraged to pursue external funding for library-related initiatives.
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    Actively engage with relevant academic programs in the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences, other university programs, and external groups.
    Teach research instruction sessions for assigned subjects and academic programs.
    Develop appropriate instructional and informational aids for students, faculty, and community patrons.
    Manage and develop collections for assigned subjects. Expend budget allocations for acquisition of library materials according to established deadlines.
    Provide research and reference support for assigned subjects to students, faculty, and community patrons.
    Conduct collection evaluations for all proposed new courses and curriculum changes in assigned departments.
    Provide advanced research support for students and faculty, including but not limited to assisting in evidence synthesis, finding and using data in the social sciences, ethical use of artificial intelligence in the social sciences, and documenting the impact of University research.
    Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions; participate in committees and faculty governance in the library and on campus.
    Communicate effectively and positively with individuals from varied backgrounds

    Additional Duties & Responsibilities
    Participate in the provision of in-person and virtual research services and of instruction for first-year undergraduate students.
    Perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Experience/Education
    Completion of a master’s degree in the field of library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association by the time selected applicant begins job.
    Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
    Degree or significant coursework in one or more disciplines of the social sciences, or professional experience working with social science students and faculty in a research library setting.
    Two or more years of instruction or liaison experience in an academic research library.
    Knowledge of the research needs of students and faculty at a Doctoral Intensive Institution.
    Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
    Ability to work effectively with a variety of groups and to create an environment of mutual respect.
    Ability to work effectively in an organization in which change is both necessary and constant.
    Demonstrated commitment to exceptional public service.
    Intellectual curiosity and adaptability.
