Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Accounting, Finance, Economics and/or related fields. Three (3) years of full-time financial accounting experience. Experience with performing reconciliations, financial analysis and/or various report preparation. Experience with general ledger programs. Experience with Microsoft Excel or a similar tool to include but not limited to V-Lookup, Pivot Tables, Macros.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Accounting and/or an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License. Knowledge and use of analytic tools (Macro, Power BI, Smartview, etc.). Experience with a financial module (i.e. Oracle, PeopleSoft). Query tool experience.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Stony Brook Foundation (SBF) Senior Accountant supports the Stony Brook Foundation’s mission by overseeing SBF corporate financial reporting and preparation of SBF annual audited financial statements. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for independently performing advanced technical and administrative accounting functions including preparation and review of reconciliations, control over general ledger and cash flow. They will work with and advise internal and external stakeholders to support Stony Brook Foundation’s goals.
Own assigned accounting processes within the department, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with policies and procedures.
Responsible for the performance of, and improvement of, the following critical monthly activities; reconciling the sales journal to the general ledger; internal audits of accounts payable transactions using sampling methods to verify that expenses align with donor intent; preparing and uploading credit card entries to the general ledger.
Actively participate in all required audits and tax return preparation, ensuring assigned schedules and supporting documentation are completed by established deadlines, serving as the audit subject matter expert for revenue recognition of gifts, gifts-in-kind, grants, and other Foundation revenue streams.
Liaison with Gift Processing and Gift Administration processes to ensure operational processes align with desired recording of transactions in the general ledger; ensure proper GAAP recording of gift and grant agreements, gifts in kind, and other Foundation revenue streams; participation in gift administration committees.
Prepare quarterly pledge receivable schedules by extracting data from the CRM system and posting corresponding entries to the general ledger; identify and implement solutions to improve this process.
Oversee the relationship for recording of revenue and sales tax for affiliated entities of the Foundation, as well as related sales tax filings with taxing authorities.
Review and provide guidance on the work of associate and staff accountants as needed.
Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
