Are you a detail-oriented professional who enjoys working with numbers and helping leaders make informed financial decisions? Join the South Dakota State University (SDState), Academic Shared Service Center (ASSC) as a Budget Analyst, where you’ll provide financial analysis, accounting, and budgeting support for academic and research units. In this role, you will work closely with Department Heads, Directors, and the ASSC Director to deliver accurate and timely financial reporting, helping units forecast, monitor, and manage various funding sources. This position offers the opportunity to work collaboratively across multiple projects, interpret complex financial data, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and university policies, all while supporting the instructional, research, and service goals of the units served.
The Academic Shared Service Center (ASSC) provides financial and administrative support to a variety of academic units across campus. Our team works closely with the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, College of Education & Human Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Pharmacy & Allied Health Professions, and College of Nursing to help ensure smooth and efficient operations. By delivering timely, accurate, and professional services, the ASSC enables these colleges to focus on their instructional, research, and service missions.
This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota.

Job Responsibilities:
Manage day-to-day financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cost accounting, and variance analysis, ensuring compliance with university policies.
Prepare financial reports, projections, and trend analyses to support leadership decision-making.
Monitor accounts receivable, revenues, expenses, and salary lines; process payments, travel requests, and reimbursements.
Provide guidance and interpretation of financial policies, procedures, and funding strategies to department/unit leaders.
Develop and maintain data collection systems and provide analytical reports to support operational and strategic planning.
Collaborate with central finance, business offices, and other ASSC team members to ensure efficient financial operations.
Participate in department/unit meetings and professional development to stay current on policies and procedures.
Provide backup support for other ASSC finance team members as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Financial analysis, budgeting, and accounting principles.
University policies, federal, state, and grant funding regulations.
Advanced Microsoft Excel functions and other applicable financial software.
Data collection, reporting, and presentation methods.
Skill & Ability to:
Interpret, apply, and communicate complex laws, rules, and regulations clearly and accurately.
Research, compile, and analyze data with attention to detail and accuracy.
Prioritize, organize, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
Establish and maintain effective, professional, and collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, and external partners.
Communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally in person, by phone, and in writing.
Provide excellent customer service and support to units served.
