Job Summary
This is an Internal Employment Opportunity.
The School of Nuclear Science and Engineering is seeking a School Head. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The School of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE), is nationally recognized for its impacts in nuclear science and engineering, education, research, and service. NSE is home to vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs, a highly engaged faculty, and a growing student population drawn by the school’s reputation for rigor, relevance, and real-world impact. Faculty in NSE are leaders in reactor physics, radiation transport, thermal hydraulics, radiation detection and dosimetry, nuclear security and nonproliferation, fuel cycle analysis, radiochemistry, radioecology, and advanced materials for nuclear applications. Collaboration across disciplines, institutions, and sectors is a defining characteristic of the school’s culture.
NSE is experiencing sustained growth in research activity and visibility, with externally funded research increasing rapidly in recent years and demonstrated alignment with interdisciplinary priorities across the College of Engineering (COE), and the university. NSE faculty are deeply engaged in collaborative efforts in nuclear materials science, robotics-enabled nuclear applications, advanced manufacturing, and national security–focused research. The school maintains long-standing, trusted partnerships with national laboratories and industrial partners. These relationships provide exceptional opportunities for NSE faculty and students, and position NSE at the center of national and international conversations about the future of nuclear energy, safety, and security.
Within Oregon State University, NSE plays a critical role through its strong connections to the OSU Radiation Center, interdisciplinary materials science programs, and other research centers and institutes. Faculty are also actively engaged with influential professional and international organizations, including the American National Standards Institute, the American Nuclear Society, the Health Physics Society, the Electric Power Research Institute, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, and the Nuclear Energy Agency. This broad engagement underscores the school’s global reach and practical impact.
The Head of NSE will build upon a strong foundation and lead a highly collaborative faculty during a period of continued growth and national relevance for the nuclear field and its context in the broader energy landscape. Working in close partnership with the school, college and university leadership, the Head will help shape the school’s strategic direction, strengthen its research and educational missions, foster an inclusive and supportive community, and further elevate NSE’s visibility and impact.
Oregon State University is committed to excellence, equity, and inclusion, and seeks leadership that reflects and advances these values and that supports student success and faculty achievement.
