  • Job Summary
    A full-time Research Laboratory Technician is sought to manage the CT (computed tomography) Core Lab in the Museum of Zoology's Biodiversity Imaging Facility at the University of Michigan. The technician will be operating a Nikon XT H 225 ST micro-CT scanner, handling fluid and dry specimens, training users to operate the micro-CT scanner, coordinating the scanning schedule and queue, and providing quotes to users wishing to utilize the Core lab's services. The ideal candidate for this position will work with students, staff, and faculty from a diverse set of backgrounds and who have varied research interests and goals that center on digital morphology. This CT lab is nested within the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, which embraces education and research on virtually all aspects of biodiversity, including:

    origins and history of species ranging from bacteria to humans
    processes by which this diversity has evolved
    ecological context in which this evolution takes place
    Responsibilities*
    Operation of the micro-CT scanner (65%): daily machine calibration and start up, filament changes, coordination with vendors (primarily Nikon) for maintenance needs, handling IT needs as related to scan acquisition, packaging and preparing specimens for scanning, maintaining CT scan database and data repositories.
    Management of the CT Core lab usage, charges, and scheduling queue (15%): Using iLab or equivalent to schedule scanning requests, provide quotes and final bills, and track all scanning. Engage with users interested in scanning.
    Training and coordinating new users (15%): On-boarding of new personnel (students, postdocs, and visitors) in micro-CT scan acquisition by conducting training sessions and one-on-one supervision during the user training period. May also include development of new training materials and promotion of the core to potential users within UM and beyond.
    Advising about CT scanning needs to potential users, including packing conditions and scanning parameters (5%): Answering email queries, coordinating with IT about emergent scanning needs or hardware upgrades, and initial data transfer needs after scan acquisition.
    Required Qualifications*
    Bachelor's degree or higher and experience with museum specimens, operating a micro-CT scanner, CT data management, and 3D visualizations or analysis of comparative anatomy and morphology.
