Bachelor’s Degree
Documented work experience with college students or children/adolescents in a professional or volunteer capacity.
Demonstrated skill using Microsoft Office suite, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. (Must indicate specific software applications with which you have experience on the application, resume or cover letter)
Evidence of attention to detail, as demonstrated in a grammatically correct cover letter and complete application.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional academic advising experience in higher education.
Demonstrated professional knowledge of Texas State academic policies and procedures.
Demonstrated experience using Degree Works degree audit software in a professional capacity.
Knowledge of NACADA core competencies, core values and theories of acaemdic advising.
Job Description
Responsible for providing quality undergraduate advice to current and prospective students, and serves as a resource for them and their parents.
Job Duties
o The Academic Advisor I, under supervision, provides quality academic advising to new, continuing, and returning undergraduate students at Texas State University. The Academic Advisor I also provides appropriate advising guidance and referrals for prospective and visiting students.
· Job Duties
o Provide accurate and consistent information about major, degree requirements, and progress toward graduation
o Clearly explain complex information related to institutional policies and procedures
o Coordinate, plan, and prepare for advising sessions
o Engage with undergraduate students in-person, virtually, and over the phone
o Help undergraduate students define and develop realistic educational and career goals
o Maintain confidential student records through accurate and thorough documentation
Review graduation applications and certify students’ eligibility for graduation
o Maintain collaborative relationships with academic units and university partners
o Acknowledge and research student concerns, collaborate with appropriate stakeholders, and advocate for solutions with a commitment to fairness and integrity
o Refer undergraduate students to appropriate resources for assistance
o Participate in university efforts toward recruitment and retention such as Bobcat Day and New Student Orientation
o Provide recommendations for continuous improvement of advising services and integrate practices aimed at improving the student experience
o Commit to ongoing professional development and attainment of knowledge regarding industry advancements and best practices in academic advising
o Provide clerical assistance as needed
o Complete work at the request of other campus offices to support processes related to accreditation and/or student degree progress (Satisfactory Academic Progress plans, Courses Counting Toward Degree, Athletic Academic Progress forms, Transfer Course Agreements, etc.)
o Other duties as assigned
