Job Summary
The Angelo State University College of Arts and Humanities and Department of Visual and Performing Arts invites applications from qualified candidates to teach online and face-to-face courses in Video Game Art and Animation. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Video Game Art and Animation is a new degree within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The ideal candidate will be able to help shape this degree for the next generation of video game artists. Applications will be accepted continuously and reviewed as instructional needs develop.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate strong abilities in art, creativity, design, and technology, supported by professional or academic experience in game design, technical art, real-time production, and game development processes. They should be capable of integrating visual arts with technology and teaching students how visual design, 3D modeling and asset creation, animation, lighting, materials, shaders, optimization, and interactive features function together in professional game-production settings.
They will also mentor students with backgrounds in graphic design, digital art, and traditional fine arts. The goal is to help students transfer their existing artistic knowledge into game development and build industry-focused technical art portfolios that demonstrate professional-level skills.
Essential Duties
Teaching:
Instruct undergraduate studio art courses ranging from foundation drawing and design to courses involving Real-Time, Level Dressing, VFX for games, 2D Animation, 3D Modeling and Sculpting, Lighting, Rendering and Look Development. Other art courses as assigned.
Research and Creative Works:
Maintain a significant, ongoing studio practice with a record of professional accomplishments, such as solo and group exhibitions at local, regional, national or international levels.
Professional Service:
Serve on departmental and university committees. Manage studio facilities and assist in the coordination of the Video Game Art and Animation program. Participate in student recruitment and retention. Participate in departmental and Art Area meetings and events. Maintain regular office hours. Work collaboratively and productively with faculty colleagues to meet the needs of the student body.
Curriculum Development:
Lead or collaborate on revisions of the curriculum, integrating traditional skills with conceptual and interdisciplinary practices. Create curriculum for new courses within the VGAA curriculum to include both online and face-to-face modalities.
Mentorship:
Academic advising and mentoring BFA art students.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in 2D and 3D digital art tools used in contemporary game and animation production.
Proficiency in 3D asset creation and integration, procedural production techniques, lighting, materials, shaders, rigging, animation systems, artist-oriented scripting, AI-supported creative workflows, XR optimization, and other commonly used tools and processes associated with game development and real-time production.
Ability to recruit, retain students in the Video Game Art and Animation concentration.
Participate in departmental/Art Area meetings and events.
Maintain regular office hours.
Work collaboratively and productively with faculty colleagues to meet the needs of students and the Art Program.
Minimum Qualifications
An MFA or PhD in game design, game programming, or a closely related discipline, including fields such as computer science, computer programming, or interactive design.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional experience within the game industry is highly desirable.
At least two years of hands-on experience in game development using Unreal Engine production methods. Strong technical proficiency with Unreal Engine, Microsoft Visual Studio, C++, C#, Python, JavaScript, HLSL/GLSL, Verse, Advanced Blueprint Visual Scripting, computer graphics math, performance profiling, and specialized pipelines like Niagara VFX, animation and rendering.
Familiarity with industry-standard software, tools, and production workflows, including Autodesk Maya, Mudbox, Adobe Substance 3D, Adobe Creative Cloud, Blender, and ZBrush.
Physical Requirements
Standing/sitting, bending, lifting, carrying as necessary per the job duties.
