Overview

The course covers British literature and culture during Queen Victoria’s long reign, 1837-1901. This was the brilliant age of Charles Dickens, the Brontës, Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Robert Browning, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, Alfred, Lord Tennyson - and many others. It was also the age of urbanization, steam power, class conflict, Darwin, religious crisis, imperial expansion, information explosion, bureaucratization - and much more.

Fiction, nonfiction, and poetry are included. The syllabus may vary depending on the faculty member teaching the course.

Course Requirements

  1. Use the editions specified above and bring appropriate book(s) to class.

  2. No more than two unexcused absences.

  3. Either two papers (midterm and final) totaling approximately 15-20 pages, or midterm paper (approximately 6-8 pp.) and cumulative final exam. Along with the first paper topic, I will distribute a list of guidelines for the format of your papers.

All your papers must conform to these guidelines or I won’t accept them. Any papers turned in late will receive an F, unless prior arrangements have been made.
