High school varsity sports schedules to shrink in Florida

For some, it was a victory. Others saw little to celebrate.

On Monday, the Florida High School Athletic Association voted 9-6 to reduce by up to 20 percent the number of games varsity sports teams — except football — could play.

The plan, a response to budget shortfalls plaguing school districts across the state, will shrink schedules for baseball, softball and basketball teams from 25 games to 20 games for the next two years.
