U.S. public education needs parents in charge

Conservatives are weary of being lectured about the appropriate attitude toward the Common Core educational standards. To Michael Gerson’s recent harangue [“A Core conspiracy,” op-ed, May 21], a few responses:

●Common Core came from progressive education reformers in unaccountable private-interest groups in the District — not from “the states.” The scheme, Mr. Gerson claimed, “is not a federal approach.” Really? The Obama administration showered money on states that committed to the standards....
