University of Virginia leaders acted prudently last week when they rebuffed Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's demand that they turn over thousands of papers and e-mails related to grants awarded to an environmental science professor previously on the faculty.

Their decision to seek a judge's counsel is valid even if the documents are innocuous. What editor would blithely comply with a subpoena ordering him to produce his newspaper's entire photo collection of odd-looking vegetables? What homeowner....
