Corbett budget slashes higher education spending, but taxes stay the same

Gov. Tom Corbett proposed a 2012-13 state budget that cuts overall spending for the second year in a row, holds the line on taxes and again cuts a business tax while sharply slashing funding for higher education and county-run social services.

"I am submitting to you a budget proposal that is at once lean and demanding," he said Tuesday in his budget address before the state General Assembly. "It is a budget that proposes more in the way of reforms by continuing to change the culture of government....
