Governor's education reform bill approved by House panel

Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s plan to pay teachers bonuses and phase out tenure passed its first legislative hurdle on a party-line vote Wednesday after two amendments and hours of testimony that pitted teachers against school boards and administrators.

The House Education Committee met twice Wednesday for more than four total hours before voting 11-4 to advance HB1234 to the House floor.

A major amendment offered by Republicans addressed some of the problems school leaders had with the bill.
