Obama and science: The 3% solution

President Obama had a simple message for the National Academy of Sciences this morning: We'll spend more money for research and development.

"We will devote more than 3 percent of our GDP (gross domestic product) to research and development," Obama told an enthusiastic group of scientists. "We will not just meet, but we will exceed the level achieved at the height of the space race."
