College Inefficiencies

Re “Staff Jobs on Campus Outpace Enrollment” (news article, April 21):

As an auditor turned professor, I have long been concerned about the costly waste and redundancy at colleges, particularly publicly financed universities.

With no financial bottom line or shareholders looking over their shoulders, colleges have little incentive to eliminate inefficiencies. This contributes to ballooning tuition.

Many colleges publicize their faculty-to-student ratio as an indicator of academic quality.....
