Retired military officials connect pre-K education to national defense

Advocates of early childhood education often point to economic or educational benefits.

But several retired military officials argued today that funding pre-Kindergarten programs like the Capital Area Head Start will pay off down the line in national defense, in that the programs produce more high school graduates and fewer criminals.

The lack of a high school diploma and a criminal record are among the reasons why 75 percent of men and women age 17 to 24 are unfit to serve in the military,....
