Education cuts too deep; time to rethink

School ends for Charlotte-Mecklenburg and most other N.C. school systems Wednesday. It's been a helluva year. And for teachers especially, it's ending with fury, fear and frustration.

More than 300 have received layoff notices in CMS's plan to eliminate 1,300 of the district's 19,000-plus jobs due to proposed cuts in funding from Mecklenburg County and the state of North Carolina. And last week, CMS Superintendent Peter Gorman said more layoffs are likely. State lawmakers told CMS to expect deeper....
