There is no simple explanation for how nearly all colleges find themselves in difficulty, sometimes considerable difficulty, right now and into the foreseeable future. The situation has many similarities to what has happened to the American automobile industry. For at least 30 years, higher education has been shifting aggressively from being seen as a public good to positioning itself as a private good.
