Higher education is an economic driver

Something profound happened this weekend: 17,623 people received degrees or certificates from Oregon's seven public universities.

That is a remarkable achievement, from the 12,802 who earned bachelor's degrees to the 372 who completed doctorates.

Graduation is a momentous step in an individual's life. But why should it matter to the rest of us?

Because as our public colleges go, so goes our state.

That's true even though Oregon has been a miser in supporting higher education. Our state....
