Does the nation have more research universities than it can afford, especially in a slumping economy?

That question is engaged in earnest today in an article on the Chronicle of Higher Education Web site. In floating the notion of closing some institutions — and, perhaps, consolidating others — The Chronicle finds support from a voice that, at least to me, was surprising: the institutions’ chief lobbyist, Robert M. Berdahl, president of the Association of American Universities.
