Supreme Court decision affirms discrimination claims of a white teacher

Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled in favor of white firefighters in Connecticut also affirmed the discrimination claims of a white teacher from Jackson, Michigan, who had been laid off in favor of black teachers, a legal expert said.

The Michigan case, Wygant vs. Jackson Board of Education, involved a 1972 agreement between the Jackson Board of Education and a teacher’s union over layoffs. The agreement said that some white teachers would be laid off, despite having more seniority,....
