Legislature reviews higher ed tuition breaks

Beacon Hill lawmakers are reviewing a slew of bills that would trim or waive the cost of earning a degree at a state college or university for veterans, teachers, firefighters and other public employees.

Lawmakers say the measures are a matter of fairness and help workers in fields that can have significant ties to a community, said state Sen. Marian Walsh, D-West Roxbury. Walsh has been pushing for state aid to help social workers cover the cost of their educational loans since 2003.
