University chief proposes furloughs to cut costs

A plan to impose furloughs on tens of thousands of University of California employees to offset deep funding cuts was proposed Friday by the president of the 10-campus system.

UC President Mark Yudof unveiled the proposal as part of a broader plan to deal with an anticipated 20 percent funding reduction by the state as it struggles to close a $26.3 billion budget deficit.

"There is no question that the cuts to come will hurt," Yudof said. "But we have worked hard to bring fairness to the process."
