University of Houston Taps Exxon, BP Expertise for Energy Mecca

The federal stimulus program comes at an opportune time for Renu Khator, president of the University of Houston, whose ambition is to develop the school into a global authority on energy research.

Khator is applying for $25 million in stimulus funds to help develop a 70-acre (28-hectare) research park focused on alternative energy such as wind and solar power. Her 10-member energy-advisory board includes executives from oil companies Exxon Mobil Corp., ConocoPhillips, BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell....
