Have you ever noticed? No one at the retirees club or your family reunion sits around and tells stories about our nation in the late 1970s, or the mid 1980s, or for that matter the whole of the 1990s.

In bits and pieces, perhaps, we hear of where someone was and what they were doing the last time gas was high, or when jobs were tough to find, or when the stock market took a tumble. But frankly, it’s been a long while — maybe since World War II — that our country as a whole has experienced anything....
