What college students need to know about money

In the weeks ahead thousands of students will head to college in the tightest economic climate our nation has experienced in many decades. Many of those students will be building up tremendous amounts of debt, like others before them. Between 2001 and 2006, student loan balances rose 16 percent to an average of $14,379; revolving debt, including credit cards, increased 24 percent to $5,781; and total installment debt, including student and personal loans, rose 4 percent to $17,208.
