Back in the late 1980s, high school graduate Steve Lawrence, then 18, experienced a number of personal firsts. These included leaving home, starting university, signing up for a student credit card and playing the stock market.

It seemed as if Mr. Lawrence could do no wrong. Going with a stock tip from a friend he was up about US$50,000.
