Southfield chief: Early education cuts prison costs

That's the opinion of Joseph E. Thomas Jr., chief of police in Southfield and a state co-chairman of the crime prevention nonprofit organization, Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Michigan.
Research indicates that high quality early learning programs for at-risk children up to five years old can significantly reduce crime and ultimately cut corrections costs by 25 percent or more, according to a police department press release.
