Not long ago, Denver high schooler Erika Ruiz couldn't picture herself taking a college-level class. Now, she dreams of attending Stanford, Princeton or maybe Harvard.

About 1,700 miles to the east, Lauren Goh lives that dream: The recent Golden High School graduate enrolled at Harvard this year and navigates her freshman year with the confidence of a student familiar with the demands of a college schedule.
