Dropout rates pose threat beyond education

America’s 30-percent dropout rate for high school students is a threat to the nation’s economic future as well as its education system, a U.S. Department of Education official said Tuesday in Rapid City.

Greg Darnieder, a special assistant and adviser to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, told a summit of educators that 100,000 high school students drop out every month in the United States, with negative impacts that damage the society overall.
