BOOKS: Walter Mosley and Lisa Scottoline forge new paths

Walter Mosley's 30 years in New York City have finally compelled him to set a series there. And if this debut featuring a crusty black detective who has seen it all is any indication, it will at least rival the Easy Rawlins series for which he has been so deservedly praised.

In his foreword to "The Long Fall" (Riverhead, 320 pp., $25.95), Mosley notes that he was motivated by the city's overall richness, diversity and contrasts. But it becomes instantly apparent that no writer could plumb those....
