For years, charter schools have struggled with mostly antagonistic districts for a large presence in Silicon Valley. Now, they're on the verge of breaking through barricades.

Over the next few years, up to a dozen new charter schools are expected to open, most serving low-income children in San Jose. This will bring an infusion of alternative schools for parents at a time that all schools are struggling to save what they have, let alone be innovative.
