South Bay educator ushers community colleges onto national stage

The nomination of a Bay Area educator to a national role has community college supporters hopeful it will mean increased attention to the two-year school system.

President Barack Obama last week nominated Martha Kanter, chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District in the Silicon Valley, as undersecretary of education. Kanter is the first community college leader to be named a president's higher-education chief.
