A Way to Help Blacks Enter Higher Education

I read with great interest your news article ''Decline Found in Black Graduate Enrollment,'' Nov. 5, and found the statistics in engineering and the physical sciences particularly compelling. As a scientist by training and now as president of a research university, I am gravely concerned about what this decline may mean for the nation as a whole, not just the black community.

It is my contention that developing a support system that encourages black students to pursue higher education is critical....
