Commentary -- U of M education an investment like no other

As of October, 2008, the University of Minnesota employs 25,976 faculty and staff throughout our state. The U awarded 13,993 degrees last year. Fall 2008 enrollment came in at 66,312.

The cuts that Gov. Tim Pawlenty has proposed are disproportionate, short-sighted, and irresponsible. Every state budget plan I've seen reduces higher education funding dramatically, and plugs the hole for two years with federal stimulus dollars that can't be used for ongoing costs.

Few state investments deliver....
