Essex County College president approaches end of 30-year tenure

A. Zachary Yamba, a giant in New Jersey higher education and the longest-tenured college president in the state, will retire at the end of the year.

Yamba, who took a financially broke and politically compromised Essex County College and restored its stability and reputation, turns 71 later this year.

He says the timing of his decision turned on the upcoming 2011 visit by a regional accrediting agency. It was the threat 30 years ago by the same agency, the Middle States Association of Colleges....
