  • Why does one seek college education? Many are of the opinion that a college degree with fetch them a good job which will then help them to lead a peaceful life. And a good job would ensure that they are able to fulfil every need of their life. However, looking for jobs or rather the method of looking for jobs has changed a lot over the years.

It was all about writing an impressive resume in the past and then going through the long procedure of application to various companies. Then anticipating for that one call that could either make or break one’s career. People would search various job classifieds in the newspapers or even websites and then start to apply for them. However, it is not so anymore. Hardly anyone or rather the younger generation scours for job opportunities in news papers.

One can say that job seeking has undergone a revolutionary change today. This is because of the advent of the social networking sites. What started out as a virtual space to catch up with one’s friends and family is now going corporate. As people get more social networking savvy, they are bound to put up their queries and requirements online.

Take for example, the ‘market place’ space on Facebook. Here employers can put up candidate requirements and the potential candidates and those who want to apply can reply to these ads. LinkedIn is another website which is specifically made for professionals to connect. Here you have your own virtual resume and the site offers various applications where you can show off your blog, your previous work and even presentations.

Today, talking about one’s self on the social network is not considered bragging. Companies have their own pages on Facebook, Orkut and even Twitter. Twitter too, offers micro blogging space. This means that within 140 characters one can post their requirements which will be seen by scores of followers online.

However, as a brand name, the corporate image should be handled very carefully. The same holds true for individuals too. This is because everything online is in real time and it will be instantly seen by tonnes of people. Media too, watches over the social networking sites like a watch dog. While one needs to be careful, students prefer the social networking sites to increase their networking skills. Not only do they apply for jobs online but also look for potential designations.

In fact with blogs, students have an opportunity to showcase their talents and even paper presentations they have been a part of in the past. Now when an employer approaches them, all they have to do is to pass on the links to them. Not only can they see the student’s resume online on LinkedIn but the links too provide ample insights into a person’s ability.

And to help the students make the most of such opportunities, colleges are even beginning to train them on how they can manage their portfolios and virtual image effectively.
