    The Department of Technology, Design, and Technical Education (TDTE) at Utah State University (USU) seeks candidates for a Professional Practice Assistant Professor position in the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program at the USU Eastern campus located in Price, Utah. This is a full-time, academic year (9-month), benefitted, non-tenure track, term faculty position, with an additional summer month available for program administration. The appointment is 95% teaching and 5% service. The professional practice assistant professor will also serve as the coordinator of the MLT associate of applied science (AAS) degree program for USU and will be responsible for ensuring compliance with programmatic accreditation and/or licensure, internal consistency, and institutional expectations for graduate outcomes.


    The successful candidate will teach courses within the standardized curriculum, review lesson plans, prepare for class instruction, grade and electronically record assignments, actively promote student retention, support externship activities as applicable, assist in accreditation requirements, and perform related work as required. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and workforce areas and include meeting student recruitment and retention goals; participating in educational planning; program organization; training and overseeing part-time faculty involved in the MLT program; evaluating student performance; motivating and advising students; acting as liaison between students and clinical site directors in placement and evaluation of students during their clinical rotations and generating program reports as needed.


    It is anticipated that the individual selected for this faculty position will start in August of 2024. This position will be supervised by the associate department head who directs the health professions programs in the Department of Technology, Design and Technical Education.

    Responsibilities
    Teach didactic courses, instruct laboratory sections, and coordinate clinical training for the MLT program on the USU Eastern campus in Price. The typical teaching load is four courses per semester (fall and spring).
    Create and maintain a positive, professional learning environment that encourages active learning, scientific inquiry, problem solving, and critical thinking.
    Prepare appropriately for lectures and labs, ensuring that material taught is aligned with current industry practices and with institution and accreditation agency standards.
    Personally supervise academic activities of students, providing appropriate resources and assistance to ensure student success, and maintaining program quality and student contact hours required by the accrediting agency.
    Develop and administer assignments, tests, authentic learning experiences, and other strategies to assess student understanding, preparedness for industry, and attainment of program learning outcomes.
    Regularly review program curriculum, learning outcomes, and assessments, and make revisions and improvements that foster effective learning and prepare students for current industry standards.
    Ensure program alignment and compliance with accreditation commission standards, institutional policies, and state requirements and regulations.
    Facilitate and monitor student progress from orientation to graduation, advise students and maintain student records.
    Mentor students related to professional growth and career choices, informing them of employment openings, career paths, and professional advancement opportunities.
    Provide leadership for the MLT programs at USU Eastern, USU Blanding, and USU Moab as applicable.
    Direct program operation, assessment, accreditation, student support, supervision, leadership, community outreach, and maintenance of internal and external partnerships.
    Develop and coordinate the externship/practicum/clinical affiliations for MLT students, including recruiting clinical sites and qualified preceptors from various facilities, preparing clinical contracts, meeting with and reviewing expectations with preceptors, and ensuring compliance with accrediting agency and institutional requirements.
    Recruit and maintain members of a Program Advisory Committee and meet at least twice annually for input and program update reporting.
    Coordinate program course scheduling, order required equipment and supplies, and attend to other routine program activities in an efficient and effective manner.
    Coordinate MLT program assessment and accreditation activities including corresponding with accreditation and/or licensing agencies, completing required quarterly and/or annual reports, developing extensive self-study reports, and preparing for on-site reviews as required by the accrediting agency, in order to maintain programmatic accreditation and/or licensure status.
    Participate in professional development opportunities, including those organized by industry associations as well as through personal study and research, to keep current with trends and practices in the medical lab field.
    Engage collegially in department, campus and community service opportunities, events, and activities, and participate in university, local, state, regional, or national professional activities and organizations.
    Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the associate department head/director of health professions programs.


    Qualifications
    Minimum Requirements:

    MLT awarded by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
    Master’s degree in medical laboratory science or closely related field from an accredited college or university.
    At least three years of experience in clinical laboratory work
    Evidence of continued education and training intended to maintain certifications and enhance professional knowledge of surgical technology instruction.
    Must meet all regulatory and accreditation qualifications.
    Demonstrated effective written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, and team skills.
    Cultural sensitivity and an ability to build rapport with a culturally diverse workforce in a multicultural setting.
    Dynamic interpersonal skills and a commitment as a team member; ability to foster consensus and collaboration.
    Strong desire to help students succeed.
    Preferred requirements:

    Demonstrated capacity to succeed in teaching at the university level and a willingness to work to become a better instructor.
    An ability to accommodate varying student learning needs through experiential lab and hands-on learning, lecture, self-directed learning, online learning, and capstone projects.
    Demonstrated basic knowledge of online learning systems, such as Canvas or equivalent.
    Prior teaching experience in a technology-augmented classroom.
    Demonstrated training in educational methods, instructional methodology, delivery, and pedagogical techniques.
