  • Job Summary
    The Neuromechanics and Applied Locomotion Research Group at the University of Utah is seeking a full-time staff-level Research Engineer. This individual will work across a variety of funded research studies examining balance, locomotion, and rehabilitation. The role will focus on developing and supporting new devices to study balance control, including new perturbation devices and instrumentation. The position will also provide technical data management and quality control support for ongoing clinical trials using wearable sensors, and assist with data collections during human subjects research studies as needed. The position will include collaborative interactions with other funded research and collaborators at the University of Utah, including those in Orthopedics, Physical Therapy & Athletic Training, Health & Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Mechanical Engineering.

    Salary: $65,000-$75,000 / year
    This is a one-year contract that is renewable based the availability of funds and performance. Funding is expected to be available for at least 4 years.

    Responsibilities
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or research related field plus three years of related engineering experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with human subjects research
    • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
    • Experience designing, prototyping, and working on robotic control systems
    • Experience using biomechanical instrumentation including instrumented treadmills, motion capture, electromyography, and / or wearable inertial sensors
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Proficient in one or more coding languages (Python, MATLAB, R, etc.)
    • Knowledge of biomechanics, gait, or postural control
    • Ability to excel in both team and individual environments


    Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required
    Nearly Continuously: Office environment.
    Seldom: Hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

    Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.
    Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking.
    Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
