University of Memphis celebrates move to Big East

University of Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson finished his short introductory speech announcing the program’s long-awaited entry into the Big East Conference, looked up, pounded his fist lightly on the podium and, holding back tears, declared:

"We worked long and hard to get into a BCS conference and become a member of the Big East; by golly, we did it, we did it."

Nothing more needed to be said Wednesday, arguably the most important day in the athletic department’s history.
